What kind of a place builds a fort in
the 21st century? We're a little
different here in Fort Lupton,Colorado. While
other cities advertise subdivisions with
'a home town feel' Fort Luptonites enjoy
living in the real thing. Ask Dean
Wittmus, who has been cutting hair in
the same shop for 47 years. Don't call
for an appointment, because he doesn't
have a phone. When you walk in, notice
the 1912 cash register dating back to
his predecessor. A short walk down
Denver Avenue from Dean's is Dales Pharmacy, where Bill Dale,
who's been a pharmacist here for over 24
years, will greet you by name. Go a
little farther and stop in at George's
Rental & Supply inc., where you'll get
advice, plus most everything you need
for a home fix-up and rental
equipment. As you walk, you may hear the
carillon chimes of the First United
Methodist Church, a memorial to their
parents given by Loren Willey and the
late Eleanor Willey or of the First
Baptist church, a gift by the family of
John Martin, who designed the city's
logo. If all the walking has given
you an appetite, we have places to eat
with names like 'Grannies,' 'The
Branding Iron' and 'House of Smoke.'
While the House of Smoke serves
delicious sandwiches, it's more famous
for smoked game, shipped throughout the
United States. If you can't visit in
person, see their products at www.houseofwildgame.com. What about that
fort? The original 1836 Fort Lupton, a
fur trading stop along the Platte River,
is being reconstructed by volunteers of
the South Platte Valley Historical
Society. Learn more at www.spvhs.org. We
appreciate our 'home town feel' but
we're not living in the past. Our award
winning recreation center a beautiful
facility with programs for everybody. New
businesses are springing up in the
five-year-old Safeway shopping center,
and more are planned. Fort Lupton is
home to Colorado Railcar, maker of
luxury passenger cars for Alaskan tours,
and the innovative Diesel Mobile Unit, (DMU)
a fast, enrgy efficient way of utilizing
existing rails for passenger
travel. Learn more about them at
www.coloradorailcar.com If you see a
Corvette in Colorado, chances are it was
sold by Purifoy Chevrolet,
www.purifoychevrolet.com the largest
Corvette dealer in the state. Your
holiday poinsettia may very well have
had its 'roots' at Colorstar Growers,
just west of the city. Should you own a
motor home, your water may be heated by
a unit made at Hap Enander's Aqua Hot at www.hydro-hot.com. Our Re-8
School District offers the challenging
Quest Academy for K-6th graders, and
more advanced placement courses than
most high schools in the state. Learn
