START SEWER AND WATER SERVICE AND PAY MY WATER BILL?

The City of Fort Lupton provides water and sewer service. If you have purchased a home, documents at closing will transfer your water and sewer service to your name, as the water stays with the property. The owner of a rental property must go to City Hall and tell them to whom the water and sewer should be billed; the property owner or the renter. Your meter will be read and billed once a month. You may pay your bill by mail, by credit card over the phone at 303-857-6694 (ask for Donna), or in person at the Finance Department at City Hall, 130 South McKinley Avenue . Their hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

START ELECTRICITY, PHONE AND GAS SERVICE

Electricity is provided by United Power. You are billed monthly and can pay by mail, credit card over the phone, automatic bill pay or at their Fort Lupton office at 323 Denver Avenue . You can start service at that office or call United Power at 303-659-0551. See their web site at http://www.unitedpower.com for more information. Gas for Fort Lupton customers is via Xcel Energy. Their phone number is 1-800-895-4999 or their web site is www.Xcelenergy.com Phone service via Qwest for home customers is through their toll-free 1-800-244-1111 number; for businesses, it's 1-800-603-6000. Broadband and voice integration phone service is available locally through SkyStream, phone 303-963-1605 or at www.skystreambb.com.

SUBSCRIBE TO TRASH REMOVAL SERVICE

Residents choose and pay for their own trash services. Gator Rubbish at 303-655-0710 is a locally owned company and Clean-Up Disposal, 303-289-2595, based out of Henderson There are also other companies based in Brighton. The companies offer a recycling service for an extra fee. Paper recycling is done by the Tailtwisters 4-H--the drop off area is at the corner of South Fulton Avenue and First Streets (just behind the water windmill.)

GET RID OF BIG TRASH WE INHERITED

Trash by the truckload is accepted by the Front Range Landfill, 1830 WCR 5, near Erie, phone 303-8828-9400. There is a fee depending upon the load, so call first for information. They are open Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. They will accept one household computer per load but they DO NOT accept hazardous materials. In June and September, the City of Fort Lupton sponsors a "big trash" Saturday for its residents. Almost everything is accepted during this free event, which is held at the City Shops at 800 12th Street. See your water bill for more information.

FIND OUT ABOUT BUILDING PERMITS

Want to put in a new fence, finish the basement, put on a deck, add a garage, erect a building or shed? Before you start, you need site plans, or blueprints or sometimes both, PLUS a buildng permit from the City of Fort Lupton. Sprinkler systems, siding, air conditioners, furnace, water heater, roofing and minor electrical repairs need a permit application only. Window replacement (if the size/type of the window isn't changed), cement patios ongrade, driveways, sidewalks, sod installation or tree removal do not require permits. REGISTER  A DOG LICENSE, DRIVER'S LICENSE OR TO VOTE

VIN numbers can be verified at the Weld Sheriff's office at the west end of the same building (303) 857-2465 Ext. 5800 Drivers Licenses are available at these locations: Greeley (800 8th Avenue #11, phone 970-352-5845); Longmont (917 S. Main Street #600, phone 303-776-4073; and Northglenn at 500 Malley Drive , phone 720-929-8636. Their hours are from 8-5, appointments are needed for driving tests and of the three, Northglenn has the longest lines, but don't expect to get through any of the locations in a timely manner, and getting there at 8 a.m. doesn't help. There are those who say that the drive to Fort Morgan (201 Ensign, M,W.F, 8 a.m.to 5 p.m. phone 970-867-2647) is worth the trip for the shorter lines. Dog Licenses can be obtained through the police department at 130 South McKinley. Cost is $2 for neutered dogs, $10 for non-neutered. Ordiances requrie licenes for all dogs and cats living within the city. The department sponsors an annual reduced fee shot clinic for pets in each spring. Fort Lupton ordinances prohibit pit bulls within the city.

GET A PASS PORT

The United States Post Office in Fort Lupton issues passports. They are at 533 Fourth Street and passport hours are from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.

ENROLL MY CHILD IN SCHOOL

New Re-8 students should be registered at the school they will attend. In general, the Union Pacific Rail Road line is the boundary of Fort Lupton s two elementary schools. Children from pre-school through 5th grade who live east of the railroad track are in the Twombly boundary. That school is at 1600 Ninth Street , their number is 303-857-7400 and the school hours for 2005-06 are from 7:45 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Elementary children who live west of the railroad are within the Butler boundary. Butler is at 411 South McKinley, their phone is 303-857-7300 and the hours are from 8:05 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. The Fort Lupton Middle School is at 201 South McKinley. Their phone is 303-857-7200 and hours are from 8:10 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. The high school is at 530 Reynolds Street , phone 303-857-7100, and school hours are 8 a.m. to 3:25 p.m. The Quest Core Knowledge Academy for high academic achieving grade school children is at 3100 Sweetgrass Parkway , near Dacono. RECREATION PASSES, CLASSES AND SPORTS

The Recreation and Community Center, 203 South Harrison Avenue, is open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. Residents may purchase photo ID cards, which enables the user to receive resident rates for the pool and exercise facilities, at the front desk. PLAY IN PARK

Parks are scattered throughout the city. Major playgrounds can be found across the street from City Hall at 130 South McKinley, or south of the Community/ Recreation Center at 203 South Harrison Avenue. There is a walking path by the Community Center and a trail along the South Platte River just east of Pearson Park, which is the city's major ball field. LEARN ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THE CITY

Fort Lupton is rich in history and there are two places to learn more about it. The Fort Lupton Museum, 453 First Street, under the guidance of life-long resident Nancy Penfold, has extensive collections of city artifacts and records. Plus Nancy, herself, is a wealth of information about the area and its history. Hours are from 9-4 most days, with a break from 12-1 and the phone number is 303-857-1634. The South Platte Valley Historical Society www.spvhs.org is an active organization currently building a replica of the namesake of the city, the 1836 Fort Lupton, at the historical park. They meet on the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Visitor's Center in the historical park(take Weld County Road 14 1/2 west of 85 to Factory Drive, go north to the end of the road.
